Am I Pregnant?
A missed period or other pregnancy symptoms can be frightening if you are not planning a pregnancy. However, many early signs of pregnancy can also be related to other health issues. Hormonal changes in your body, weight gain or loss, and stress can affect your menstrual cycle. You could even be experiencing a natural miscarriage. Experts say there is a possibility that up to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. It is possible to still have pregnancy symptoms a few days to weeks after a miscarriage.
Here are some of the other pregnancy symptoms to look for:
- Swollen or tender breasts
- The need to urinate often
- Cramping and possibly light bleeding
- Fatigue
- Feeling nauseous (also known as “morning sickness”)
When sexually active, you can become pregnant, even with contraception. If you are experiencing the above symptoms and a missed period, it is time to take advantage of our free, confidential pregnancy testing.
How Does a Pregnancy Test Work?
Mosaic Health uses lab-quality tests (self-administered and nurse-administered) that are 99% accurate and can detect pregnancy in its earliest stages. If you are pregnant, your body begins making the hCG hormone after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of your uterus, which usually happens about six days after fertilization.
The levels of hCG rise quickly, doubling every 2 to 3 days. For the most accurate result, you should wait to test until the week after your missed period. If you feel you cannot wait until after your missed period, you should wait two weeks after you have sex. If you are pregnant, your body needs time to develop detectable levels of hCG. Our lab-quality pregnancy tests can detect the hCG hormone in your urine approximately six days after ovulation.
What If I’ve Already Taken a Home Pregnancy Test?
Although home pregnancy tests are relatively accurate, there is, unfortunately, user error. Often, women will take them too soon or not read the instructions thoroughly. Even if you have taken an at-home pregnancy test, you will still be required to take a pregnancy test at Mosaic Health. If your center test is positive, we can do an ultrasound to verify viability.
What Do I Do Next?
Getting a pregnancy test can be stressful. Even if your test came back positive, it could still be hard to believe. We can help you process what this means for you and your partner. Your patient advocate will be ready to give you the support and advice you need. You don’t need to make a quick decision. You have time, and we want to talk with you about your options.
