I’m Afraid of How My Partner Will React to My Unplanned Pregnancy

Facing an unplanned pregnancy can leave you with a lot of questions. Wondering how your partner will take the news about the pregnancy can be even more anxiety-inducing. Luckily, there are things you can put in place to ensure that you can tell your partner in a safe environment.

Am I in Danger?

Before telling your partner about your pregnancy, you’ll need to consider why you are fearful of how they will react. Are you concerned that they will be upset, or are you in an abusive situation?

If it’s the latter, you’ll need to be sure that you have a plan in place to ensure your safety and well-being. For example, you can speak with a trusted friend or family member about leaving some belongings and important documents at their home, just in case you need to stay with them. It would also be wise to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE. This way, you can get the professional support and help you deserve.

If you are planning to tell your partner about your pregnancy, it is crucial that you do not tell them by yourself. This may be dangerous. Instead, have someone else there with you that you trust, and consider telling your partner in a public place. This will help to ensure your safety during the conversation.

Telling Your Partner

If you aren’t in an abusive situation but are still concerned about how your partner may react, take a deep breath. You are in control here, and you don’t have to tell your partner immediately if you don’t want to.

Think about the environment in which you would like to tell them. Would you prefer to tell them in a public place like a restaurant or park, or do you feel comfortable telling them at home? Whatever you decide, it is your choice.

Give yourself the time you need to collect your thoughts and determine how you’ll break the news to your partner. When you do so, try to stay calm, and give your partner the time they need to process the news. They may be feeling a lot of emotions, so it is crucial to give them the space to think about how they feel.
