Do I Have To Tell My Partner I Want an Abortion?

Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy can be overwhelming. Part of the stress can be sharing the news of your pregnancy with your partner. Further stress can be added when you tell him how you’ve decided to handle it, especially if you don’t know how he will react.

Read this article for ways to share the news with confidence and empathy.

Make Sure That You Are Safe

Your safety is the most important thing. If you think your partner may display violent or harmful behavior, consider having a trusted friend present or having the conversation in public. It’s most respectful to tell him in person, but you can also share the news over the phone if you’re afraid for your safety.

If you’re living with your partner, consider making other overnight housing arrangements before you share the news if you’re not sure how he’s going to react.

Make Sure It’s The Right Time

There’s not going to be a perfect time, but it’s probably not a great idea to have this conversation right after he’s come home from a long work day.

Make sure that you are both relaxed and in a safe and private place (if possible) to give your partner space to air his thoughts.

Give Them Time and Space

Legally, you do not have to get your partner’s permission to have an abortion. However, he likely will have an opinion since he is involved. If possible, be willing to hear him out and try to have an open mind on his input.

He may be frustrated or angry at the news at first, so give him time to air his feelings and be willing to have a conversation with him. If he has a differing opinion, have the facts and be prepared to answer his questions with how you came to your decision.

Make the Final Decision

Legally, speaking, your decision is the one that matters regarding the pregnancy.

Because of this, make sure you’ve done all your research and have discussed all options with your partner, if possible, before fully committing to the termination. While abortion may seem like the best or only solution, work with your partner to fully research each option before making a final decision.

The worst that could happen is that you have more information. At Mosaic, we can better inform you about all your options at no cost to you. We also offer no-cost ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy, determine viability (if there is a heartbeat), and where the pregnancy is located.
