Are Abortions Free at Planned Parenthood?

“Graduate high school, go to college, get a job, get married, have a baby” — Maybe your life plan sounded a bit like that, however, life doesn’t always go as planned. For many women, an unplanned pregnancy sounds like the biggest “hiccup” imaginable. If that’s you, it’s important to remember that you have options. As you consider your pregnancy options, it’s important to understand the potential costs and risks you might come up against.

Many women experiencing unplanned pregnancies express anxiety related to finances, and often, women make decisions for their pregnancy solely based on a lack of financial resources. Here at Mosaic Health, we believe women experiencing unplanned pregnancies should be able to make an informed decision through access to free and confidential healthcare and information on all of their pregnancy choices.

Are abortions free at Planned Parenthood?

Abortion is often sold as the most financially beneficial option for women experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Because of that, we’re often asked if abortions are free. The answer is no — abortions are not free at Planned Parenthood or other abortion clinics. Each procedure costs hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars depending on what stage of pregnancy the woman is in.

What other costs should I consider when deciding if abortion is right for me?

The cost of an abortion at Planned Parenthood doesn’t always include the cost of the other medical expenses associated with the abortion procedure. You’ll likely also need to pay for a pregnancy test, an ultrasound, and perhaps other prenatal tests and follow up appointment costs.

Other factors to consider when deciding what option is right for you are the potential physical and mental side effects that can accompany an abortion. Not only can abortions cause physical side effects that could result in additional medical expenses, but there may also be long-term mental health risks involved. According to a study done by the British Journal of Psychiatry, post-abortive women are 81 percent more likely to experience mental problems.

Where can I receive free reproductive healthcare?
